The Perfect Jewellery and Wedding Manicure

As we near summer and wedding season, we spoke to the founder of one of Glasgow’s most successful nail salons, ‘NAF! Salon ’, to discover their tips to achieving the perfect jewellery or wedding manicure. Whether you are looking for inspiration, maintenance tips or styling- Tammy Koslowski is an expert on all thing’s nails. Create the perfect manicure to match your jewellery.

For gemstone jewellery looks, would you advise having nails the same colour as the gemstone jewellery or using clashing colours?

'You can really enhance your jewellery by matching your nail colour to the gemstones in your jewellery , but I personally love clashing colours. I think cherry red nails complement emeralds perfectly and a burnt or bright orange manicure really makes blue sapphire stones pop, so aiming for the opposite colour on the colour wheel really works! I also love going for similar colours, like amethyst gemstones and hot pink nails'.

What are your top tips to maintain your manicure?

‘My biggest tip is using cuticle oil- this should be used a minimum of 3 times every day. It is important to invest in a good cuticle oil to keep your hands and nails hydrated. Be sure to apply it over your gel polish and underneath the tips of your nails as well as to your cuticles and surrounding skin. This will help to stop your polish from chipping. Another tip is to use a scrub on your hands once a week to buff off dead skin cells and keep your hands looking fresh. Be sure to moisturise after hand washing, especially when using hot water. And don’t pick at your polish!’

What is your favourite brightly coloured bridal nails?

‘I love it when a bride comes in and chooses neon or bright colours for their big day. All bridal nails are special but it’s really fun when they choose something outside the box like a bright red, neon green or lilac, even if it is just a French tip'.

Which type of wedding nails would you recommend to a client who is unsure about which style they want?

I always advise our clients to get a style that they are comfortable with, nothing too different from what they would usually get on their nails. A lot of brides tend to  have short nails then get long nails for the big day, which can make them uncomfortable as they aren’t used to this. I would recommend a classic version of a style you are familiar and comfortable with, something that makes you feel good.’

What would be your dream wedding nails?

‘I would go for an elevated version of my usual manicure; I normally get nail art so would want it for my wedding day too. I’d try to keep them a nice balance between fun and classic, perhaps a long almond French with stars or gemstones, it’s a fun way to incorporate wedding colours without being too distracting in photos and videos from the big day.’

What are the most popular colours in your nail kit?

‘Mostly nude and beige shades, BIAB in particular! People either lean towards trending nail art or they opt for slick and classic manicures. I’d say our most requested nails are nude BIAB (builder gel) with a French tip – my favourite because it wears really well. Colour choices are so seasonal, pink shades are trending for spring at the moment and in winter, our clients love to get dark brown, black or deep red nails. We have a huge range of colours at NAF! so people love to experiment’.
