Eternity Rings Historical Beginnings

The origins of eternity rings date as far back as 2000 BC. Far from how they are recognised now, the concept began 4000 years ago in Ancient Egypt. Lovers would carve the rings from bone or metal and adorn them with beads to gift to their partners. They considered the circular shape to be a depiction of their ongoing love.

Since those days, eternity rings have become synonymous with diamonds. The first diamond-adorned rings emerged in the market in the 1960s. Half and full eternity rings became a recurrent gift for partners, the “half” or “full” referring to how far the diamonds wrapped around the band. Today, eternity rings are considered one of the most meaningful jewellery items that can be given, a pure symbol of how love has continued to flourish.

The Meaning of Eternity Rings

Why and when would you give an eternity ring?

Eternity rings are often gifted on a milestone anniversary or occasion, this could include the birth of a child, an important date or simply to showcase your feelings. Eternity rings can be a considerate offering to any spouse, reminding them of your appreciation and devotion after the relationship landmarks of weddings and engagements have passed.

Eternity Rings Selection & Styling

With dedicated ring placement for both engagement and wedding rings, it can be difficult to pinpoint where to wear your beloved new eternity ring. While there are no set-in-stone rules as to how to wear an eternity ring, there are some common suggestions that may help with styling your beloved new piece.

What are the choices for eternity ring styles?

When shopping for eternity rings you will notice two distinct styles, half and full. Full eternity rings will have diamonds or gems set around the entire circumference of the band, whereas half-eternity rings will have diamonds concentrated to the top half of the band. Both make beautiful choices and will be loved equally by their recipient. It can be worth considering your spouse's personal style, a half-eternity band may be preferable if the wearer favours big stones, with the setting allowing for more sparkle in a smaller condensed space. However, a lover of all-round glam may prefer diamonds circling the band completely.

In which order do you wear engagement, wedding, and eternity rings?

The ways in which one adorns an eternity ring are as boundless as the love it represents. Typically, the custodian bestows this piece on their ring finger, where it nestles in perfect harmony. An orchestration of love’s symphony, the preferred arrangement is often to wear all three together. The wedding ring, the steadfast foundation upon which love is built remains at the base of the finger, keeping it closest to the heart. Above it, the engagement ring, a radiant testament to a profound promise. Completing a perfect trio of devotion, the eternity ring, with its circle of gems rests on top of the stack.

In moments where the stacking of three rings may feel too compact for one finger, there is another traditional wearing style. The wedding band and engagement ring would remain shining on the ring finger, with the eternity ring being adorned on the third finger of the right hand.

Just as love stories are personal and different to each person, the wearing of this trio of special rings is the wearer’s choice. Lead with the heart and discover the perfect placement for you.
