TUDOR is celebrated for its adventurous spirit, technical prowess, and an acute sense of style. Explore the rich history of TUDOR from the aspirations of Hans Wildorf to the pioneering force of the brand today.
“For some years now, I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the TUDOR watch company.” – H. Wilsdorf.
In February, the “TUDOR” trademark was registered on behalf of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf. Eight years after its registration, TUDOR travelled to Australia for the first time. TUDOR watches were then delivered exclusively to the Willis company who had been wholesaling jewellery since 1858. Some rare TUDOR timepieces from this time can be found with the Rolex symbol, as the brand effectively guaranteed the technical and aesthetic quality of the watch. In 1936, Hans Wilsdorf fully took over TUDOR and the House of TUDOR rose began appearing on the dials of each timepiece. Inscribed with a shield, the logo symbolised the invincible union of strength – the watches robustness and the grace of its lines.
As time went on, the shield started to gradually disappear from the logo, leaving just the company name and the rose; finely drawn to emphasise the brand’s elegance and style. Since then, TUDOR thrived in its field to produce some of the most iconic watches from the Black Bay to the Clair de Rose. The fearless Rolex sibling has made its own mark on the watchmaking world with innovative timepieces for every condition.
TUDOR embodies fearlessness, lending itself perfectly to the slogan ‘Born to Dare’. Each ambassador of the brand is a risk-taker, adventure seeker and is not afraid to push boundaries. David Beckham embodies the TUDOR philosophy in his skill level, drive and determination that led him to become one of the most acclaimed players in football. Another fitting ambassador whose talent differs from Beckham’s yet parallels in strength and achievement is Lady Gaga. She represents the brand perfectly in her role in reinventing pop culture and pushing the boundaries of showmanship.
