The Qixi Festival celebrates a romantic legend telling the story of how Zhi Nu, a goddess renowned for her weaving skills, met an ox herder called Niu Lang in the mortal world. The two fall in love but when Zhi Nu's mother, the queen of heaven, finds out Zhi Nu is banished from visiting earth and is left devastated. Eventually the queen mother agrees to let the couple meet for one night every year on Qi Xi, which means the 7th night. Today the festival is celebrated all over China where chocolates, flowers and gifts are given, the ancient tale has deep roots in the heart of the Chinese people and will be passed on through generations as a symbol of love and hope.
