Meet Laings Omega Brand Ambassador

Let us introduce you to John Gray, Laings very own Omega Brand Ambassador. John is an expert when it comes to Omega watches and definitely knows his Speedmaster from his Constellation. He’s been telling us all about the Swiss watchmaking masters…

Why is Omega a popular brand and what do you like about them?

OmegaThe Omega brand is extremely popular and sits amongst the top watch houses in the world. Watch-lovers are always impressed with the width and depth of options in each range and you are almost always guaranteed to find a piece to suit you. They are also some of the most accurate and reliable timepieces in the world and the handsome designs are always completed with impressive mechanisms.

I love the range on offer and I always feel that there’s an Omega for every personality, budget and use. We also receive limited edition pieces that serious watch-collectors are delighted to see. It may seem daunting to be confronted with such an array of models, however another fantastic thing about the brand is the commitment they show to educating us about their timepieces. The Omega Training Academy provides me with all the knowledge that I need, meaning that I in turn can provide Laings customers with all of the information they require to make an informed decision.

Which model is my favourite?

Omega OMEGA SEAMASTER 300 1957 TRILOGY

My favourite model is without doubt the 2017 Seamaster 41mm divers watch with the blue and black dials. This particular piece was worn by Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 Goldeneye film. And it truly is a Bond watch! It has a helium escape valve for serious divers, it’s also extremely robust with ‘bulletproof’ construction. The dial houses the classic calibre 2500 movement which has impressive accuracy. The smart and simple dial means the remarkable watch can also be worn formally and it has a comfortable fit.

What is Omega’s stand-out collection?

For form and function I have to say the Seamaster. This collection is available in three subsections, Seamaster 300, Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m and the Aquaterra.

The Seamaster 300 is an entry level diver’s watch with simple functions and durability. It is also keenly priced and can be a great watch to take your fist steps into the world of horology with. The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m is perfect for sport-loving watch-wearers. It’s finished with a ceramic face and a bezel and dial that glow to help divers to keep a track of their time underwater. The Aquaterra is a great option for anyone who is looking for a sporting watch, but doesn’t need the more serious diving functions. The sleek models are finished with a contemporary look and have also been designed with simplicity, comfort and excellence in mind.

What’s the best buy in store?

OMEGA SPEEDMASTER MOONWATCH PROFESSIONAL 42 mm The Speedmaster Moonwatch 42mm £3520.

This special watch was flight-qualified by NASA in 1965 and the Moonwatch has now been part of six moon landings, as well as numerous explorations of space. The original watch is still available today with a hesalite crystal face, which does not shatter, and it is now one of the world's most iconic watches. This year it will celebrate 60 years since its first landing on the moon!

The watch is very versatile and can be worn for both casual and formal occasions. Additionally it comes with an impressive presentation box which includes two straps, a strap tool and an eye glass. The timepiece is a handsome model which is completed with impressive mechanics, as well as having an exciting story to tell!

What impresses you most about Omega?

The spectacular range of Omega watches has always impressed me.  Each collection has a particular watch-wearer in mind and it’s difficult to walk away without feeling tempted by at least one of the models.

The Globemaster – This is the world’s first independently tested Master Chronometer and it’s loved by real Omega ‘watch geeks’.

The Seamaster – This collection has been built to withstand the toughest of physical challenges. With a great build and water resistance they’re fantastic if you’re looking for a real sports watch.

The Constellation – A Constellation is an instantly recognisable design. Sophisticated and understated this is the perfect watch for anyone who appreciates a timeless classic.

Omega OMEGA CONSTELLATION GLOBEMASTER

The DeVille – The DeVille combines a refined aesthetic with impressive quality and is great if you’re looking for value and functionality.

The Speedmaster – This iconic design was the first watch on the moon and is embedded in Omega’s rich history. This watch is part of their DNA.

Why do you like working with watches?

'No two days are the same'

I love working with watches. It is a business where there’s constant changes, be that in watch style or customers who are visiting the store. We welcome people to Laings who are both local and those who have travelled from further afield. Every individual who enters the store looking for a new timepiece poses a new challenge and I really enjoy thinking about how they may become a future friend of the business!

Within the Laings's working environment, the training we receive and the support gives is the tools to provide the best customer service to everyone we meet. We have an amazing selection of brands to offer to customers and I really do enjoy delivering customer service that goes above and beyond.
