What are eternity rings and when should you look to buy one?

In recent years we have seen eternity rings start to become more and more popular amongst couples. However, with their increasing popularity comes an increasing level of confusion surrounding eternity rings, what they are, and when you should buy or receive one. Hopefully this post will help answer these questions for you.

Eternity rings can be seen as far back as 4,000 years ago, when Egyptians began using them to represent the eternal love between two people, as well as the eternity they planned to spend together. Some say the rings were originally designed to mimic a snake devouring its own tale, which was seen as a symbol of eternity.

While modern styles do vary, the basic design of eternity rings has not changed much over the years. Eternity rings usually consist of a solid band with precious stones set into it, either all of the way round, or sometimes just over half. The most common stones to have set in an eternity ring are diamonds, although it is not unusual to see emeralds, rubies or sapphires featured instead.

So now we have covered the basics of what an eternity ring is, we can move on to when you should look to buy one, or hope to receive one.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to timings for eternity rings, as it is something very special and personal to the individual and their partner. Many people believe that an eternity ring should be a celebration of a certain milestone in a marriage, whether this is 5, 10, 15 or even 20 years. Your eternity ring will not only be symbolic of the time you have spent together, but also the future you have with each other.

An eternity ring doesn't have to symbolise an anniversary, however. In recent years lots of people have been giving their significant other an eternity ring to represent other major milestones in their life together, such as the birth of their first child. It is also becoming ever popular to have an eternity ring as a wedding band - diamond set wedding rings are a beautiful alternative to the traditional plain gold band and nowadays many brides and even grooms are choosing to start off married life with an added touch of sparkle! There are few limitations when it comes to the metal colour, as long as you consider that it should be hard wearing and precious then you can take your pick of Platinum, Palladium, White, Yellow or Rose Gold. The same goes for the cut of the stone, the traditional round brilliant cut is still the most popular but the square cuts such as princessemerald and baguette cut are now readily available.
