Goodwood Members Meet with IWC
'My day out at Goodwood #74 MM courtesy of Parkhouse and IWC Schaffhausen was a day of excitement and high drama from the very beginning. Within minutes of arriving with my father John Reed, we witnessed the heart stopping crash of car 93, the 1961 Lotus - Climax 18 on the very first lap of the very first race driven and owned by Stephen Bond. We had just reached the top of the steps leading to the viewing area when we saw the car flipping through the air end to end before dropping and disappearing into the tunnel that runs under the track. At the time we thought the worst, but luckily the driver escaped with only a broken collarbone. This picture was taken just after the crash and shows smoke coming from the tunnel where the car ended up, and a wheel which luckily missed all of the spectators in the disabled viewing area. We were no more then 50ft away at the time of the accident.
Following the crash there was a delay which meant we had plenty of time to wander round the paddock to view the incredible collection of cars assembled. A picture of my father taking a close look under the bonnet of an Aston Martin and a view of the impressive collection Gulf GT cars in the paddock.
Goodwood is a fantastic opportunity to see some of the greatest cars in motor racing history up close and in the flesh, and experience the sound and smell of them back on the track where they belong. My favourites of the day were the F1 and GT cars from my youth which I grew up watching on TV.
The Goodwood members meeting is a truly amazing event. I am happy to have been given the opportunity to experience this unique event following my win in the Parkhouse picture competition using one of my own pictures.
Thanks again to Parkhouse and IWC Schaffhausen for this wonderful day which I and my father will never forget.'
Parkhouse would like to thank Chris for sharing his experience and his fantastic images with us. All images courtesy of C J Reed Photography.
