Swiss Beginnings

Jaeger LeCoultre has a respected heritage and are still based in the original Swiss village where they started their journey in 1833. Antoine LeCoultre began a small watchmaking workshop in the beautiful Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. He was an inventor and in 1844 he created the world’s most precise measuring instrument of the moment, the Mollionmeter. This was followed by the invention of the first keyless system to rewind and set watches. Due to his success in 1866 LeCoultre & Cie was born, allowing them to manufacture all of their watch expertise under one roof. It quickly became known as the ‘Grande Maison of the Vallée de Joux’ and still today every part of a Jaeger LeCoultre watch is manufactured under one roof.

It was in 1903 when a Paris-based watchmaker to the French Navy, Edmund Jaeger, asked LeCoultre to help him to develop and produce the ultra-thin movements that he had invented - a partnership had been born. The collaboration was a success and the two continued to work together, officially renaming the company Jaeger LeCoultre in 1937.

The Designs

Every Jaeger LeCoultre watch begins as a sketch and the talented designers draw the watches, taking into account current trends, as well as their traditional pieces. It’s this combination of the past, present and future that characterises a Jaeger LeCoultre design. Each and every part is beautiful, with intricate and elaborate decorations. The calibre movements are all hand-decorated and act as miniature works of art. Every part of the watch is embellished, whether you can see it or not, with each piece aiming to reach technical and aesthetic perfection.

Their watches have a delicacy and elegance to them. One particular model has become iconic, the Reverso. The refined design is unique and individual in the watch world. The rectangular case swivels, reversing, to reveal a new watch face on the other side.
