Pearls are more than just jewellery; they are a creation of nature and a testament to its design, symbolising purity, wisdom, and prosperity. It is no wonder these precious gemstones have withstood the test of time and will forever be treasured across the world. Kokichi Mikimoto revolutionised pearl production when he created the cultured pearl – little did he know he would change the trajectory of the jewellery industry forever.

The Legacy of Mikimoto
“My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.” – Kokichi Mikimoto.
Kokichi Mikimoto, known as the Pearl King, was the founder of the world-renowned pearl jewellery brand Mikimoto. He devoted his life to pearls and etched his name in history in 1893 when he transformed the jewellery landscape forever with the creation of the cultured pearl. Prior to this, pearl jewellery was extremely hard to come by, as natural pearls were rare and their cultivation problematic. Mikimoto identified these challenges and created a solution, becoming the first in the world to successfully culture a semi-spherical pearl in 1893.
He continued his efforts to culture many different types of pearls, including black and white South Sea cultured pearls. Kokichi seized every opportunity to promote his pearls globally, travelling to international exhibitions to showcase his extraordinary creativity. He established a strong presence as a pioneer in the jewellery industry, laying the foundation for the successful brand we know today.
Pearls in History and High Fashion
Pearls have a long-established history and an enduring place in the fashion world. Due to the rarity of this gemstone, pearl jewellery was highly desirable throughout history, primarily used for trading, gifting, and within royal circles. According to Pliny the Elder in Natural History, after many days of lavish banquets, Cleopatra made a bet with Marc Antony that she could host a dinner worth a small fortune. Cleopatra owned a pair of earrings containing two of the largest pearls ever discovered at the time. At the end of yet another lavish feast, she had her servants bring her a glass of vinegar, dropped one of her earrings into it, and, when the pearl had dissolved, consumed it.
Other famous historical figures known to have loved pearls include Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, and Queen Elizabeth II.
Pearls remain prominent in high fashion today, evolving from classic strands to cluster and drop designs, with dramatic pearl jewellery gracing runways and red carpets in recent years. Significant trends include layering and colour experimentation. Pearls are often layered with chains and other metals for a modern, playful look — though this isn’t recommended for daily wear due to their delicate nature, and the abrasions layering can cause.
We’re also seeing a spectrum of coloured pearls storm the fashion world, with black, golden, and pink pearls increasing in popularity. Mikimoto’s Black South Sea pearls exhibit a broad range of alluring colours, including black, green, and blue.
Modern Interpretations
Mikimoto is a perceptive brand that moves with the times while honouring its storied heritage. With a multitude of fashion-forward, contemporary designs now accompanying their classic range, there is pearl jewellery for every style. This includes their V-shaped pearl drop designs, Ribbon Collection, Morning Dew Collection, cluster, and leaf designs.
They continually adapt to new markets, promoting pearls for all genders and championing inclusivity. It is no wonder Mikimoto has cemented itself at the forefront of the jewellery industry, paving the way for innovative pearl designs with limitless possibilities. We look forward to seeing what the future holds as they continue to thrive and create an admirable legacy.
