The Chronograph - A Look at Watch Movements

The movement of a timepiece is the equivalent of the heart to a human body – without it, the watch simply cannot function. Rather than focusing on the movement itself, we look into the different complications that are built into watch movements, such as the Chronograph.

Referred to as the ‘brain’ of the watch, complications are clever functions watchmakers have developed to enhance the basic movement of a timepiece. Today, we look at the chronograph function and some of our favourite chronograph watches.

Invented in 1861 and first used by Longines, the chronograph is commonly identified by three sub-dials within the main dial as well as three pushers on the side of the case; for stop, start and reset. These functions allow the timepiece to act as a stopwatch and tachymetre and also add a stylish and sporty look.

One of our favourite chronographs is the OMEGA Speedmaster Moon watch, the first watch on the moon. In 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing, OMEGA launched a new limited edition Speedmaster to pay tribute to that iconic mission.

The OMEGA SPEEDMASTER MOONWATCH PROFESSIONAL GENTS WATCH is an impressive representation of the brands adventurous and pioneering spirit. This model features a black dial, small seconds subdial and tachymetric scale all mounted on a 42mm stainless steel case. At the heart of the chronograph is OMEGA’s mechanical calibre 1861, the famous manual winding movement, worn on the moon.

Another of our favourite chronographs is the Breitling B01. Introduced at Baselworld 2009 this chronograph is one of the most reliable, high performance and robust movements in the watch world and is used in many Breitling models.

The PRE-OWNED BREITLING NAVITIMER B01 CHRONOGRAPH TWA EDITION boasts a silver dial, eye-catching red sub-dial and is presented on a handsome brown leather strap. The Navitimer is loved by aeronautical enthusiasts all over the world and is the perfect balance of practicality and style.

Nowadays many watchmakers play around with the shape and size of the chronograph movement. An example of this is the TAG Heuer Monaco Collection.

The TAG HEUER MONACO CALIBRE 11 GENTS WATCH is truly individual. As the first square chronograph movement, this piece became famous for its unique design and ground-breaking technology. Paying tribute to the daring design this model displays a square polished steel case, blue chronograph dial and black calfskin strap. The TAG Heuer Monaco has definitely earned itself a spot on any watch collectors wish list.
