As Laings Workshop continues to grow and evolve, we proudly celebrate rising talent within our team. Under the guidance of experienced peers and the master craftspeople who came before them, trainee goldsmiths Eilidh Blance and Amy Chu are undergoing intensive training to refine their skills and perfect their craft.
Here, we introduce them and share their remarkable journey.
MEET AMY CHU
With a devoted love of textiles and ceramics, Amy’s journey into goldsmithing began in secondary school. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of ‘wabi-sabi,’ she embraced the beauty of imperfection, an idea that shaped her artistic vision. Realising that jewellery could combine both her passion for textiles as well as ceramics, Amy pursued a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Glasgow School of Art. After honing her skills and developing her unique style, Amy graduated and joined Laings.
Since then, Amy has undergone rigorous training, mastering both foundational and advanced techniques under expert guidance. “Perfecting the art of claw retipping has been a key part of my development. I feel out of all the techniques I’ve learned in my career; this stands out as one I have enjoyed the most and can produce the best outcome with.”
MEET EILIDH BLANCE
On the path to becoming a qualified goldsmith, Eilidh Blance joined Laings in 2024 and has been refining her skills ever since. Whilst studying at Glasgow School of Art, she worked with a variety of materials allowing her to be exposed to a broad range of techniques. Since joining Laings, she has continued to build her confidence and expertise in key areas such as ring sizing and stone tightening.
Eilidh’s dedication to her craft is evident in her commitment to continuous learning. She is driven by the aspiration to one day create jewellery from concept to completion. “I want to see the client own a piece that I created, wearing it routinely and cherishing it.”
At Laings, Eilidh works on a diverse array of jewellery that passes through the workshop. From restoring cherished family heirlooms to reimagining existing pieces into contemporary designs, she is continually expanding her expertise and craftsmanship.
As Eilidh and Amy continue their journey toward becoming master goldsmiths, their passion, dedication, and evolving expertise will play a vital role in shaping the legacy and future success of Laings design department.
