Patek Philippe Introduce the New Calatrava Pilot Travel Time

This September Patek Philippe has delighted watch lovers by extending their family of pilot-style watches. The world-renowned watch brand has introduced the new Ref. 7234G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. Here we explore the new model and look at the inspiration behind the impressive timepiece.

Inspired by the manufacture’s aviator’s watches from the 1930s the new Calatrava Pilot Travel Time rounds out the magnificent watch family. The highly recognizable design was first launched five years ago and has already established itself as a modern classic. Today it continues to impress with two time zones, as well as the Alarm Travel Time, a grand complication with a 24-hour alarm.

THE BEGINNING OF PILOT-STYLE

In 2015, Patek Philippe surprised aficionados by launching a watch with a highly unusual design. It was finished with a prominent case, as well as a dial with large white numerals and luminous hands that contrast sharply against a dark background. With its name and functional features, the timepiece recalled the first aviator’s watches. Patek Philippe also took inspiration from two aviator’s watches that had been crafted in the manufacture in 1936, special models that allowed pilots to easily and precisely determine their positions. The Ref. 5524G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time was a remarkable homage to aviation pioneers and the grand epoch of aerial conquest. Today’s re-imagining, the Ref. 7234G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time takes this already magnificent model to a new level.

A WATCH FOR TRAVELERS OF THE MODERN ERA

Not content simply with a new edition, Patek Philippe paid tribute to their own heritage with a highly contemporary interpretation of the icon. Instead of black, the usual dial colour of aviator’s watches, a special elegant blue was chosen, offering an excellent contrast for optimized legibility. To provide a function that’s more useful for modern-day travellers a display of a second-time zone has been added, made possible by the exclusive Travel Time mechanism. The easily operable system, patented by Patek Philippe, is characterized by two-hour hands from the centre. The local-time hour hand can be adjusted via two pushers in one-hour steps and the date is synchronized with local time.

A FAMILY OF PILOTS WATCHES

The emergence of this new face in the Patek Philippe collections will be a popular choice amongst watch lovers who appreciate a decidedly technical timepiece, featuring all the facets of artisanship, precision, and the timeless elegance that’s typical of a Patek Philippe watch. It joins a family of timepieces, with an eminently recognizable design, that has proven popular.

In just a few years the pilot-style watches have established themselves as key models in Patek Philippe’s collections. They subtly embody the combination of tradition and innovation, shared by all of the manufacture’s watches, presenting themselves as new classics of contemporary timepiece design. The introduction of the Ref. 7234G-001 Calatrava Pilot Travel Time continues the success of the family.
