The Laings Journal

History and Heritage
The journey of the Mikimoto pearl began with Kokichi Mikimoto, who was driven by a passion for perfection and a desire to revolutionise the pearl industry. Disturbed by the poor quality of natural pearls, he pioneered the creation of the first cultured pearl in 1893 and perfected a round pearl by 1905, transforming the industry.
The cultivation process involves maturing oysters for two years, then manually inserting a bead and mantle tissue to stimulate pearl formation. The oysters are carefully tended in the sea for one to three years, during which nacre forms around the bead, eventually producing a lustrous pearl.
Collections at Laings
We are privileged to showcase Mikimoto’s iconic collections in all four of our Laings showrooms and online at Laingsuk.com. The Classic Collection by Mikimoto features a range of their most timeless and delicate pieces, including single pearl pendants and stud earrings. It is no surprise that this curated collection is popular among brides, pairing perfectly with diamond pieces on your wedding day. The classic collection also makes for perfect milestone birthday and anniversary gifts, with pieces destined to be treasured forever and become future heirlooms.
The Morning Dew collection mimics the subtle glimmer of nature’s dew drops. This collection features a selection of pearl pendants, earrings and rings, that implement diamonds within each piece for an elegant yet subtle sparkle. Akoya and Black South Sea pearls are the showstopping elements within these eye-catching jewellery pieces. Historically associated with classic pearl jewellery, Akoya pearls are known for their round shape and elegant lustre. Black South Sea pearls are among the rarest and most captivating gems in the world of fine jewellery. Cultivated primarily in the warm waters around Tahiti and other South Sea islands, these pearls are celebrated for their naturally dark hues, which range from deep charcoal to shimmering shades of green, blue, and aubergine. The perfect choice for those seeking a bold yet refined statement.

Understanding Pearl Grading
Mikimoto applies some of the most rigorous grading standards in the world to ensure only the finest pearls bear its name. Each pearl is meticulously evaluated by expert graders who assess several key attributes: lustre, which reflects the pearl’s brilliance and glow; surface quality, where fewer blemishes indicate higher value; shape, with perfectly round pearls being the rarest and most prized; colour, including both body colour and overtone; size; and nacre thickness, which contributes to durability and depth of beauty. Mikimoto’s grading process sets it apart—only the top 5% of cultured pearls meet the brand’s exacting standards. This dedication ensures that every Mikimoto pearl is not only beautiful but also a true symbol of excellence and refinement.

Caring for Your Pearls
To preserve the timeless beauty of Mikimoto pearls, proper care is essential. Pearls are organic gems and more delicate than other gemstones, so they require gentle handling. Always put on your pearl jewellery last—after applying makeup, perfume, and hair products—to avoid exposure to chemicals that can dull their lustre. After wearing, gently wipe each piece with a soft, damp cloth to remove any oils or residue.
Store pearls separately from other jewellery in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratches from harder items. Avoid airtight containers, as pearls benefit from slight natural moisture to maintain their sheen. With regular wear and proper care, your Mikimoto pearls will continue to radiate elegance for generations.

Choosing the right pearls is about understanding quality and trusting craftsmanship. With knowledge of key grading factors, you can select pearls that are not only beautiful but truly timeless. Let your choice reflect your style and become a cherished part of your story.
