The Laings Journal
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR UNIQUE IDENTITY AS A DESIGNER?
AL: I would call myself a passionate French jewellery designer with a keen eye for detail.
WHAT ART MOVEMENT/ARTISTS INSPIRE YOUR DESIGN?
AL: I find inspiration in many different art movements, minimalism, biomimicry and industrial design are particularly influential to my pieces. I resonate deeply with the simplicity and clarity of minimalistic design and the ingenuity of nature in biomimicry. Together these movements guide my design philosophy and help me create meaningful, functional and innovative pieces.
COULD YOU SHARE INSIGHTS INTO THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR THE HERO OF BESPOKE COLLECTION? WHAT WERE THE KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDED YOUR CREATIVE DECISIONS?
AL: I began this process by drawing inspiration from the world around me – not only from my own learnings and expertise but from the work of my colleagues and the beauty of the natural every day. This sparked my imagination and helped me begin my initial concepts. I have a deep passion for fantasy and nature, which allowed my designs to develop organically.
THE ROLE OF NATURE THROUGHOUT THE COLLECTION IS DEPICTED SO VIVIDLY. IS THERE A PERSONAL REASON YOU CENTRED YOUR DESIGNS AROUND FLORAL MOTIFS?
AL: Nature plays an important role in my life. I love forest walks and my trips are often focused on beautiful landscapes and wilderness. It’s hard not to be inspired by the beauty of the leaves, branches and wonderous elements.
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE BESPOKE JEWELLERY HOLDS SUCH AN ALLURE? WHAT SETS IT APART FROM MORE CURATED JEWELLERY?
AL: Personality, exclusivity and uniqueness. The design will reflect the client’s style and evoke a story that is meaningful to them. A bespoke design is the transformation of emotions into material.
ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING TRENDS OR EMERGING DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES IN THE WORLD OF BESPOKE JEWELLERY THAT YOU ARE EXCITED TO EXPLORE IN YOUR WORK?
AL: Customers are becoming more adventurous with their jewellery and more curious than ever about having a piece of bespoke jewellery made exclusively for them. Coloured gemstones are becoming more popular, which excites me as a designer. Customers are moving away from the traditional.
HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS TO HELP THEM REALISE THEIR VISION WHEN CREATING A BESPOKE PIECE? WHAT IS THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS LIKE?
AL: It’s my favourite part of the process. I like to get to know who I am designing for. Listening to their stories, feelings and tastes is an essential part of the design process. Its about asking the right questions too. What don’t they like. Their job. Their passion and hobbies. What I find most important is to understand the client’s style and expectations, I find my creativity by observing and analysing them as a person. I am lucky to have a natural flair for design and create my concepts with confidence.
WHAT FEELINGS DO YOU WANT TO ENCAPSULATE IN YOUR DESIGNS?
AL: I want people to feel an innate sense of joy when they wear my designs. Capturing not only their happiness but perhaps a nostalgia as well. I’d like to think that my designs are kept with my clients throughout life’s most precious moments.
