The Laings Journal
International Gemological Institute, Antwerp
Two lucky members of the Edinburgh team, Kasia and Roberta, recently visited the International Gemmological Institute (IGI) Offices in Antwerp, Belgium for three days of diamond grade training. Roberta gives us a summary of her experience and what she took away from the visit.
The fast paced and exciting trip covered the entire process of diamond buying and we left with a huge amount of new information to take back to Edinburgh. Everything from the origin of diamonds right through to how they are certified was talked about over the three day visit. We were taught a number of key aspects, including expanding our knowledge of the 5C’s of diamonds – cut, clarity, colour, carat and certification.  Given the unique nature of purchasing a diamond, I think it is really important for people to feel confident in the skills and knowledge of staff to help them pick the perfect piece of jewellery. This training has definitely made me to feel that I have the knowledge I need, on all things sparkle related!
Our training of diamonds inclusions (flaws in the diamond) was also developed, meaning that we can see any imperfections within a diamond as well as learning about diamond simulants (imitation diamonds). This means that we make sure we always have the highest quality of diamonds at Laing and can easily show customers why our diamonds are a cut above the rest! We were also taught about the importance of having a reputable diamond cerficiation, such as those provided by IGI. Fully understanding the grading system means that I can easily explain the diamond buying process to customers and why it is important that diamonds come with all their cerficiation paperwork.
Overall, the visit to the IGI was fascinating and we would really recommend the experience to anyone with an interest in diamonds. The insights I have gained has meant that my passion for jewellery and diamonds has become even stronger and I can't wait to get back to Edinburgh and share my new knowledge with everyone in store. For something as special as a diamond, it is vital we can provide the highest quality of information and the IGI training certainly allowed us to feel as though we can continue to provide this in store. I am already hoping that I can go back and discover even more about the fascinating world of diamonds.
