Diamond Certification: Why It’s Important
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to diamond shopping and this is why diamond certification shouldn't be overlooked! It’s often an emotional and financial purchase, one that you want to get right and the correct documentation is an important part of this.
COLOUR F, CARAT 0.50ct, CLARITY SI1 Whether it’s a diamond ring, necklace, bracelet or pendant, diamond certification is a way to ensure quality. Ultimately it’s a way to give you peace of mind as it acts as an assurance of the diamonds condition, plus it can really add value to your diamond. A diamond can often be seen as an investment, so you want to know what you’re getting and with a diamond certificate you have definitive proof, as well as ensuring that you’re paying the right price in the first place!
COLOUR G, CARAT 0.50ct, CLARITY VS2Laings of Glasgow uses IGI (International Gemological Institute), GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) to certify our diamonds. These are the main three laboratories in the diamond industry and all have excellent reputations and standards. Through these laboratories we have the highest level of diamond certification from renowned institutes. They act as an independent authority when it comes to grading your diamond, meaning that they can be trusted and are unbiased – therefore you know exactly what you’re getting.
Diamond Certification can be seen as ‘quality analysis’. It provides all the information, from the 4 C’s (carat, colour, clarity and cut) to any extra information, including things such as fluoresence and polish. Before you take the plunge and buy a diamond you may have already considered the 4 C’s and this is the best way to give you peace of mind that they’re right.
A certified diamond from one of these laboratories means that is has been scientifically measured and the characteristics of the diamond professionally evaluated. The correct instruments have been used and a rigorous process has been carried out, this independent process supports the value of the diamond.
COLOUR G, CARAT 1.00ct, CLARITY VS2At Laings we only stock the highest quality of diamonds and using the certification we take into account things like the colour, stocking no lower than a H diamond and paying attention to the clarity, which highlights the inclusions and internal flaws. We have a long history and heritage specialising in diamonds and want to ensure that you’re getting the best possible diamond for your money, with many of our rings you can also view the certificate online!
For example you can open the GIA certificate, in the product details section, for this Signature Platinum VS2 Brilliant Cut Diamond Ring. Using this you can see that it has diamond certification for being a 1.00 carat stone, which looks breath-taking when set in diamond shoulders! You can also see that it has a colour grade of G, defined as near colourless. As well as looking at the clarity and cut grade, plus it provides information such as the polish, symmetry and fluorescence.
A piece of diamond jewellery is something that will last a lifetime and if you want to be positive that it’s completely authentic then making sure that it has got Diamond Certification from a renowned laboratory is the best way to do this!
