A Swiss Start

Founded by Auguste Agassiz, Longines began its journey in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Auguste wanted to create high performance and technical innovations that would always exceed expectations. This meant that they successfully produced their first movement, the 20A in 1867, winning a prestigious award at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. This passion for mechanical modernisations meant they continued to develop over the years. In 1878 they produced a simple chronograph movement that can be used for precise timing.

Longines became known for their attention to detail and precision time-keeping, leading them to be forever linked to the world of sport. It was as early as 1881 that they began to sell watches to the realm of horse-riding, both bettors used them to assist them in their assessments and riders to help them to improve their performance. By 1886, they were already supplying the majority of New York’s sports officials.

As they progressed they became even more entwined in the world of sport, with their high precision timing winning respect. Over the years they have been the timekeeper for world championships in sport, as well as, the partner of international sports federations. In 1933 they were involved in accurately timing ski competitions and from then on they’ve been part of skiing , gymnastics, equestrian events and many more!
