The Baume et Mercier Journey

In 1830 in the Swiss village Les Bois, found in the beautiful Jura Region, two brothers, Louis-Victor and Celestin Baume took the first steps on the Baume et Mercier journey.

The watch-making brand grew rapidly and by the late 19^th century, after expanding into Britain, India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Burma, they had a solid international reputation. During this time the founders had many break-through moments, one of which occurred in 1869 when Louis-Victor gave his daughter the gift of a gold pocket-watch. He immediately realised the potential of women’s interest in watches and from 1920-1940 they heralded innovative designs in this area.

It was 1918 when the Baume brand took on the name that we still know it by today with the appointment of Paul Mercier. Baume et Mercier was born and Paul took on the challenge of taking the company to the next level. It was in the next year, 1919, that the company was awarded the highest accolade in the watchmaking world, the ‘Geneva Hallmark’. As a token of exceptional craftsmanship and quality, this was really a prestigious award and marked Baume et Mercier out as one of the finest watchmaking brands.
