All Eyes on Patek Philippe at BaselWorld 2015
|
When Patek Philippe hits the headlines it's usually because they’ve shown an uber-grand complication watch such as their 175th anniversary Grandmaster Chime (featuring twenty complications and a $2.6 million price tag, it is the most complicated watch they have created), or when one of their historic pieces has been setting records at auction such as the Graves Supercomplication that sold for a not inconsiderable $24 million last November. |

At Baselworld 2015, all eyes are on Patek Philippe for a different reason. The Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Ref. 5524 is quite unlike any watch that Patek Philippe have released before. It draws on the heritage of their widely respected Travel Time complication and introduces it to the style of a pilots watch, a style that Patek Philippe have only used twice before, with both watches only ever being made as prototypes in the 1930s. They both now reside in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The Ref. 5524 features a large 42mm white gold case with pushers on the left of the case that adjust a third, skeletonized hand on the dial to allow the wearer to keep track of both Home time and Local time whilst travelling the world. The dial is a stunning dark navy blue lacquer and features large white gold Arabic numerals and wide baton hands, all coated with Superluminova for easy day and night time legibility. An analogue date display is shown at the six o’clock position. The case features a sapphire crystal case back so you can admire the beautiful automatic winding Calibre 324 movement and the watch is finished off with a vintage style brown leather calfskin strap that matches perfectly with this watch. |

| It’s a brave departure from the norm for Patek Philippe but the last time they deviated from their traditional style was in the 1970s when they created the Nautilus, which went on to become one of Patek Philippe’s most iconic watches and is still a mainstay of their collection today.
