The Laings Journal
A Day In The Life - Lynsey Whyte
Sales Consultant Lynsey Whyte has been with Laings of Glasgow for nine months now and here she shares her day with us - from buzz of the alarm to the head hitting the pillow!
Every Morning I….
Peel myself out of bed at roughly 6.45. I set 2 alarms previous to that because I love waking up and knowing I still have a little time left to sleep! After I’ve showered I will paint my face on (how tired I am determines how much make up I wear), get dressed and my mum kindly drives me to the train station. I spend the journey scrolling through social media. Once off the train I head to work, maybe stopping off for a roll and square sausage first.
In a nutshell my role involves…
Keeping the window displays clean and beautiful, staying on top of customer orders to ensure they get them on time, keeping up to date with the brands and knowing the stock and making sure that packaging is stocked up. Giving every customer the Laings experience is the most important part of my role!
I was attracted to the job because…
I was intrigued by the idea of working with luxury goods. I have always had an interest in style and jewellery and watches are an integral part of that. When I started at Laings I had just graduated from university and I was interested in working for a Glasgow based company who I could build a career with.
My typical work day involves…
I prefer to get to work fairly early so I can chill with a hot chocolate and touch up my lipstick before starting. I hate feeling rushed. Our day always starts with a team talk and then we get cracking with putting all the stock into the windows as it gets taken out each evening. Morning tends to be the quieter point of the day, so I’ll take this opportunity to place any orders I need to from the day before and hope that the day will bring lots of customers. I am the brand ambassador for Roberto Coin so from time to time I’ll need to make sure the display is clean and if any stock is sold I’ll redisplay to fill the gap.
Lunchtime arrives! I don’t do anything overly exciting on my lunch break, normally have a toastie or soup and read a magazine.
The afternoon typically brings more customers so I’ll either be serving or covering the floor as we need to for security. If there are any quieter spells I can use this time to check over emails or chase orders with suppliers etc. It’s also a chance to read over brand catalogues and the Laings website to keep up to date on stock. As we have 3 stores in the Argyle Arcade, it’s difficult to keep track of new stock, but our website is the ideal place to view it all.
My most memorable work moment was…
Selling my first engagement ring. I had worked with Laings for a couple of months before finally experiencing this special part of the job. Selling something like an engagement ring can take some time and it’s lovely to be able to build up a relationship with the customer, find out about them and about their partner and then do your best to present them with the perfect ring. My first engagement ring customer was off to travel with his now-fiancée and I loved hearing about their plans, even if I may have been a little jealous! When the couple came back to get her finger sized, I was so happy for them because I could see how completely overwhelmed she was and she was absolutely delighted with her beautiful Sharman D’Neill ring and it looked stunning on her finger!
The worst part of the job is…
Working with such beautiful luxurious items and not being able to have them myself. How tormenting?! I recently sold an absolutely stunning oval cut diamond ring from our signature collection which is the ring I have my eye on. It was a breeze to sell because I love the ring so much however it’s a shame I cannot gaze at it every day.
The best part of the job is…
When you know you’ve made someone’s day. I’m a pretty chatty person and I love engaging with the customers and having a natter. Hopefully they will leave Laings, not only with what they were looking for, but also having enjoyed their experience in store. I’m somewhat of a curious soul and I love hearing about how the customer might propose and when the ring has been chosen and the customer leaves, it’s satisfying to know that they are away to make someone so happy!
Laings have given me the opportunity to go on a couple of training days which are very beneficial and usually involve good food! I had the pleasure of going on both Tudor and Longines training days and they have made me feel much more at ease with selling the products.
My Laings family are also a bonus part of the job! I love them all and thoroughly enjoy being a part of the team.
After work I…
Run for my train! I see my girlfriends at least 1 night a week for dinner and gossip and I will spend most other nights with my boyfriend. I have also recently started my own blog so quite a lot of my free time has been consumed by that.
