Not Your Regular MOT

We all know that time of year - the dreaded car service, and yet, everyone knows the price you can pay if you neglect this necessity. A quality watch is no different from any other well-oiled machine. A watch requires care and attention to keep it in the best condition possible. After all, luxury watches are designed to be worn for many years and you can't expect any instrument to run perfectly without paying it due attention. This is why servicing your watch is an important part of owning a luxury timepiece.

Here at Laings of Glasgow we understand how valuable your watch is, both intrinsically and extrinsically. That's why we have invested heavily in our state of the art Watch Workshop, which is based at our Glasgow Head Office. Recently refurbished, our workshop has been built and designed in accordance with strict Rolex guidelines, ensuring your watch is serviced to the highest possible standard.

The high quality of equipment and technical expertise of our Rolex accredited in-house watchmaker, Ian Anderson, guarantees peace of mind that your precious timepiece is in safe hands. Ian is a member of the British Horological Institute with 35 years' experience. He has been accredited by major luxury watch houses including Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier and Tag Heuer. Ian has trained in Switzerland directly with Patek Philippe and Rolex, undertaking accreditations every 3 years to ensure the upkeep of the essential brand standards that allow Laings of Glasgow to host one of only two Rolex authorised workshops in Glasgow. Ian personally completes the majority of our watch repairs and services from start to finish in our Glasgow workshop.

So why should you have a watch serviced? Well, the answer is quite simple - everyday use of all watches leads to inevitable wear and tear on the movement, bracelet and case. Even if you are obsessively careful with how and where you wear your timepiece, the nature of the movement inside means that it will eventually require a service. Over time the oils in the movement start to dry up and this can, over time, start to cause a whole range of problems from time-keeping issues to the erosion of the piece's water resistance. Needless to say if these issues do occur it can become quite a costly exercise to put the watch back to working order. This is why we advise all of our Rolex and luxury timepieces be serviced every 3-5 years.

What does a watch service entail? When servicing a mechanical watch, our watchmaker Ian performs an exhaustive series of checks to ensure your watch is returning to you in peak condition. Each watch is serviced to the highest standard, right here in Glasgow city centre and is quality assured by the most prestigious of watch houses. You can view the steps involved in a service and battery change at our Watch Servicing and Repairs page on our website

What if you think your watch is broken? Let's be honest - life happens! Even the most careful of watch owners have no control over fate, accidents do happen and when they do Laings of Glasgow is there to make sure your timepiece is returned to working order. It would be a very rare case that a watch is completely irreparable - so even if it has been dropped, smashed or run over, it is worth booking the watch into our repairs department to be examined.

Repairs and Restoration Our watchmaker Ian has been trained to look at watches of any age, regardless of brand or type and will do everything he can to repair or restore it. There are some watches that may be returned to the manufacturers to undertake a repair, while the majority will be managed in-house in our Glasgow workshop, ensuring the quickest turnaround possible.

So it's simple, if you have taken the time and care to invest in a quality watch, show it the love and attention it deserves - book your watch in for a service with our repairs department. You can enquire for further details online or come into our store at a time that suits you.
