Andrew Geoghegan: Life as a Jewellery Designer

Andrew Geoghegan jewellery has gone from strength to strength over the years and is a widely celebrated jewellery brand. But, what’s it like for the man behind the jewellery? We spoke to Andrew Geoghegan himself about his favourite pieces and what it is that he loves about designing.

1 – Do you have a favourite piece or collection?

“I think everyone has favourites and it seems to be that my most recent design, because I’m still doing further designs on it, thinking about it and considering it, so it’s felt and it’s current. One of the designs I’ve done of late is called the Chapiteau which means ‘place for a spectacle or an event’ in French and I designed this in France. This harks back to earlier inspirations of strength and geometry, where you’ve got this wonderful hexagon form, which at the moment I’m totally obsessed with. I love the geometry of it, the strength of it, it’s dynamic. This has become my new favourite and I love the fact that it was conceived in France in a very beautiful environment. You’ve got essentially a hexagon of diamonAndrew Geoghegan 0260010242ds, or a hexagon of precious stone and there’s nothing like it. I know that hexagon form has been used in other jewellery, so I haven’t invented that, but in this form it’s totally unique and beautiful. I’ve fallen in love with this.”

2 – What’s been you career highlight?

“I’m tempted to say when we won ‘Designer of the Year’ with the British Jewellers Association, now the NAJ, in 2013-14. But it’s not about that for me. It’s great to win awards and I was immensely grateful to get that, but it’s more about what my job, my profession allows me to do, which is incredible. I have a job where I am designing, expressing and creating beautiful jewellery. That’s not about one moment, that’s about the whole lifespan of my career and that’s brilliant. It’s about the whole journey, rather than one specific moment.”

3 – Run us through your day-to-day?

“Day-to-day, well that does change from time to time! In terms of working it is a combination of, running a business, business administration, Andrew Geoghegan clair-luneplanning, discussing details with my team and whenever possible obviously I love to design. That wouldn’t be at a desk, I know I need to be in an environment which isn’t work-centric otherwise there’s too many distractions, the phone’s going, the e-mails flashing up. For me it’s doing what I need to do in terms of administration and managing the business, but then really pulling out of that and being inspired and designing creatively.”

4 – What’s the best part of the job and what do you enjoy most about designing?

“What I enjoy most about designing is designing itself. Absolutely. The most enjoyable part of the job, in terms of a particular moment you could say, is when we have the work photographed and we’re sent it it’s almost like ‘that’s it’. The final step of the design has been realised photographically. When I see that done, it’s the final, final point. I get that we have to sell and market and do more with the design. But seeing that image is like the stamp, the seal.”

5 – How would you sum up your jewellery?

“Bohemian. British. Beauty. Perfect. Unique. Conceived in love.”
