Our Top ‘Left-handed’ Pre-Owned Timepieces Selected by James Crawford

In 2022, we have seen the popularity of the new Rolex GMT Master II reach new heights. The most distinct feature on this model is that the crown is on the left-hand side of the case, designed with left-handed watch lovers in mind, who wear their watches on their right wrist.

At Laings, our Pre-Owned collection is home to unique timepieces, and Pre-Owned watches manager, James Crawford, has selected the perfect pieces for those in search of a left-handed watch or who simply adore a quirky and unusual watch. Laings is delighted to present watches from the renowned IWC Schaffhausen and Panerai in its Pre-Owned collection, each in limited supply from their respected brands.

IWC Big Pilot “Right Hander” IW501012

Launched in 2019, this now discontinued timepiece was IWC’s first wristwatch where the crown sits on the left-hand side of the case. Just like it’s right-handed brother, the IW501001, the watch measures at an impressive 46mm case size and features the iconic onion shaped crown. This limited edition, automatic timepiece, boasts a substantial 7 days of power reserve, which is indicated on the sub dial at 9 o’clock.

With neatly placed small seconds sub dial and date window, alongside the contrasting colours of black and slate, this timepiece is given texture and honours the principles of the Pilot’s collection being easy to read at a moments glance. The thick riveted black calfskin leather strap completes the overall appearance of a modern-day pilots watch. With only 250 pieces ever produced, it makes this watch one for the ‘Destro’ enthusiasts and Pilots watch community alike.

Panerai Luminor Left-Handed PAM01075

Panerai is a brand with strong traditions and a rich heritage as producers of military standard watches. The brand exclusively supplied the ‘Marine Militare’ (The Italian Military) with wristwatches and other combat instruments since the late 1930’s. Today, Panerai timepieces are a nod to the past, with an eye on the future.

In the luxury watchmaking space, Panerai has produced a considerable number of watches for the right wrist compared to its counterparts, catering for the 10% of the world's population that are left-handed. This unique 47mm Luminor ‘Left-Handed’ model, is based on a 1950’s Luminor design, with the iconic crown guard placed on the left-hand side of the case. Models like this were given to the Frogmen of the Italian navy, who wore their compasses and depth gauges on the left wrist. The dial composition is clear and uniform, featuring only hours and minutes hands in a simplistic approach to watch design. Its 3-day manual wind mechanism can be viewed through the sapphire crystal case back. The watch is completed with a dark brown calfskin strap with an additional black rubber strap, making it versatile for every occasion. This is unique timepiece, being limited to 250 watches worldwide. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own your little piece of history.
