COP26 Series: Panerai Paves the Way for Sustainable Watchmaking in the World of Horology

The Scottish city of Glasgow is one that means a lot to Laings. The location where it all began in 1840, and we are proud to be welcoming delegates from all over the world as we host COP26. A meeting of global world leaders, their discussions will shape our environmental futures. A brand committed to creating timepieces responsibly, Swiss watchmaker Panerai pushes the limits of horology through the lens of sustainability.

Known for its rich marine history and impressive dive watches, Panerai combines passion for the sea with meticulous engineering, creating watches that encourage adventure. Building a path to net zero with its processes, materials and boutiques, Panerai maintains Swiss horological expertise while operating with an outlook that celebrates its origins while protecting its future.

Sustainable Materials

The materials used by Panerai in everything from timepieces to catalogues are ethically approved by various accreditations such as the Responsible Jewellery Council, Protection Suisse de Animaux and the Forest Stewardship Council. As an example, the wooden panels used in Panerai boutiques around the world respect the protection of its eco-system and conservation of limited resources, meaning suppliers must guarantee that wood production and processing activities comply with local legislation, rules and norms that allow such activities to be carried out sustainably.

Sustainable Manufacture

Perhaps the most impressive of Panerai’s projects is its eco manufacturing strategy. Panerai’s impressive production site opened at the end of 2013 and represents an extraordinary opportunity for the sustainable optimisation of production processes, both in terms of quantity and quality. The building has zero environmental impact when it comes to the production of carbon dioxide – thanks to the integration of several technologies designed to reclaim and recycle resources. Using emission reducing devices, as well as electricity from renewable sources, eco-sustainable policies and processes are promoted among employees in a combined effort to protect our environment while still ensuring excellence.

Committed to a Legacy

Dedicated to maintaining and progressing its sustainability efforts, Panerai annually monitors its CO2 emissions on all activities from manufacture to employee travelling for effective offsetting activities. Managed by an entire CSR committee, Panerai encourages its affiliates to operate sustainably, crafting a legacy of dedication and commitment. Staying true to this mission, the Luminor Marina released at this year’s Watches and Wonders features one of the brand’s most remarkable technological achievements to date: eSteel. 89g of the Luminor Marina eSteel components are made of recycled-based materials, corresponding to 58.4% of the watch’s total weight. Both the case and dial of Luminor Marina eSteel feature the new recycled based steel alloy.
