Panerai Embodies Marine Excellence in the Luminor Marina

The Luminor Marina is the result of Panerai’s commitment to ever-evolving technical innovations and longstanding tradition. The unmistakable Italian design has earned its place as a fundamental mainstay among divers’ collections.

The unique design along with its advanced technologies grant the Marina its deserving position in the ranks of Marine horology. Read on to discover the accentuated identity of the Panerai Luminor Marina.

The Birth of an Icon

The use of luminescent and self-luminescent materials used in the creation of Panerai watches prompted the patent on 11th January 1949 for the name ‘Luminor’. Due to the expansion of military and civil atomic technologies, Giuseppe Panerai recognised that the link with radioactivity had to be handled with caution. The name ‘Luminor’ was then born, identifying a neutral and fresh name for the collection. As a result of extensive studies and experiments over the next decade, the Luminor was reinvented with a new luminescent tritium-based substance (a hydrogen isotope), with very low and harmless emissions. The Luminor became a trademark in Panerai diving pieces, along with its distinctive crown-protection bridge.

Luminor Marina

Today, the Luminor Marina is the result of advanced innovation and long-standing tradition, incorporating the unique aesthetic of the iconic 1950’s model with sleek Italian design. The Luminor Marina continues its epic journey as the characteristic graphic expression is intensified by the natural reaction at the base of the florescent compound called to revive it.

The Panerai Laboratorio di Idee chose high performance Super-LumiNova to resurrect the collection. The PAM1313 and 1312 are instantly recognisable by the neon green of the retro luminescence, an evocative colour returning to the brands roots. The small seconds indicator at 9 o’clock is an unmistakable element of many Panerai watches – especially the Luminor Marina.

At the heart of the Marina is the P.9010 calibre, an automatic movement only 6mm thick, entirely designed and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Equipped with a twin spring barrel, the movement provides an accurate and reliable power reserve of three days and has the distinctive practical function for quickly setting the hour hand, which can be moved in steps of one hour forwards or backwards, at the same time automatically adjusting the date.
