Proposals from the Pages

The 4th of March is World Book Day, where artists and authors are praised globally for their contributions to lives through literature, we thought what better way to celebrate than with a sparkling Laings twist, looking at some glittering proposals from the pages.

We asked the Laings Marketing Team about their favourite literary proposals. With so many beautiful love stories played out on the pages, we’ve narrowed it down to our favourites. Without further ado here are our top three proposals from the pages.

Proposals from the Pages

“I love reading autobiographies, and Michelle Obama’s book ‘Becoming’ details her relationship with Barrack, including their engagement story. There’s something so sweet about how normal it is. She talks about how they discussed marriage before getting engaged, and differing opinions. Just before he proposes he even riles her up with old arguments before a dessert plate arrives with a diamond ring and he drops down to one knee. It’s so lovely how he surprises her, and there’s nothing more romantic for me than a true love story. – Kirsten Woods, Content and Communications Executive

“For me you can’t beat the classics. The proposal between Anne and Frederik in Persuasion is perfectly dreamy and has that signature Jane Austen romance that we all dream of. In an incredibly heartfelt letter the words ‘will you marry me’ aren’t actually written down, but they don't need to be. The sense of love and passion in his words are enough to give me butterflies” – Julia Redshaw, Marketing Coordinator

“After recently seeing the old film adaption of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing I was inspired to read the play. For me, the proposal between Beatrice and Benedick is one of a kind. Initially sworn enemies it is clear that they have trouble admitting they’re crazy about each other and eventually they make it official through the signature excellence of Shakespeare’s script. This proposal perfectly encapsulates the passion of romance and I think it’s totally charming.” – Sally Alobaidi, Head of Marketing
