A Proposal Tale of Love and Nostalgia

During these difficult times, there is no more heart-warming story than the one of true love.

Here our client tells the tale of his unique love story ending in a beautiful proposal taking place at the same spot where it all started 32 years ago in Glasgow.

"We first met in the close at 5 Lawrie Street in Partick, on the 3rd May 1988. My friend Alan and I were at college together and shared the 1st floor flat since August 1987. Amanda and her pal were student nurses and moved into the ground floor flat below us on the 2nd-3rd May 1988. Amanda walked past me in the close that day and had dropped her scarf, which I picked up and handed to her! And I just KNEW!

In typical west-end fashion, flatmates came and went, and Amanda and I ended up as flatmates for a while in the 1st floor flat. Since 1988, we've been neighbours, friends, flatmates, lovers and everything else in between.

Amanda went away travelling for three years in 1992, and when she returned to Glasgow in February 1995, she became my flatmate again in my new place on Allison Street.

We've both had other relationships over the years and periods of not seeing or hearing from each other as well. I got back in touch with Amanda via Facebook in August 2019, and after quite a few messages back and forwards, I went over to visit her in Anniesland. It felt so right to see her again after nearly nine years, and things just went from there, really!

My first visit to Laings was the 30th January, when I selected a ring, which even had an 'Irish' connection, to complement Amanda's Irish heritage! Over the course of a few e-mails, I'd stated that I'd like a slightly larger stone, so Vivienne did a search around other branches and located the same design with a larger stone in the Cardiff branch.

I made the ring box on the 3rd February, lined it all, got an inscription on a bronze inlay made, and french-polished it all! The ring looks perfect anyway, and the box totally sets it off! I had the ring for 2 weeks and I looked at it every night, hoping she'd like it! I made the champagne holder last week at my workshop, from an old pallet I had, it was meant to be sort of rustic!

The Lockdown tried its best to delay everything, but Laings pulled through for me and got the ring sent up from Cardiff in time for my "32nd Anniversary Proposal"!

I rehearsed my lines over and over again, but when it came to my actual proposal, I don't think I spoke as clearly as I hoped, though I didn't fluff anything! Nerves and excitement totally got to me! Amanda was totally bowled over with the ring and said 'yes' straight away, and she couldn't believe it when I said, "wait there, I've got something else for you", and I produced the roses and the champagne! I've always loved Amanda, even before we met that day. I was just waiting for her to come along... She completes me. She always has.”

Being part of a clients proposal journey is the most wondering thing, and we could not be happier for this lovely couple. We wish them all the best for the future!
