Two Portuguese business men commissioned an order with IWC for a series of larger watches that could run as precisely as marine chronometers for the Captains and Officers of Portugal’s merchant navy. Perhaps the most sought after model in the Portugieser family the Chronograph has been on the wish list of watch collectors since its release in 1998. Back then, it was the first Portugieser watch that not only allowed the wearer to read the time, but also to stop it with its sporty functions.

The Portugieser Automatic has become one of the most successful Portugieser models ever to be produced in Schaffhausen. The pawls, automatic wheel and rotor in the iconic Pellaton winding system are made from extremely wear-resistant ceramic, whilst two barrels build up an impressive 7-day power reserve.
