The Watch Dictionary (U to Z)

Let’s look at U to Z in the Watch Dictionary …

U for Unidirectional Bezel

Watch Dictionary

A unidirectional bezel is a 60-minute marked bezel that can only be rotated anti-clockwise - a feature that is often found in diving watches. The purpose of this is to measure the amount of time spent underwater accurately while ensuring that the diver will not accidentally nudge the bezel to indicate they have more time than they do. This is especially helpful when your oxygen tank only allows a specific amount of time under water before you must reach the surface again.

V for Vintage

Vintage watches are the perfect examples that luxury watches do hold their value, especially if you buy the right one.

A vintage watch is regarded as a watch that has more than 20 year’s history. In today’s Pre-Owned market, they are very sought after as often they mark a special year in your life or is an innovative original from its time.

The Heuer Autavia is a special piece that dates back to circa 1973 with a unique faded dial that can only be created with age. The case, dial, movement and the exterior is all original and no parts have been replaced - making it an extremely rare timepiece!

W for Worldtimer

Perfect for the frequent traveller, the world time function is the best watch complication to keep you on track with your timekeeping. Usually featuring a ‘city ring’, the world timer function allows you to change from one time zone to another with ease. All you have to do is select which of the 24 time zones you are in and the timepiece will do the rest for you as it then adjusts to the correct time.

X for X-Display

X is a difficult one so here we have ‘Ex-Display’. Within our Pre-Owned watch collection, we have a selection of Ex-Display watches that are great buys, especially if you are looking for an almost new watch with a lower price tag.

These are timepieces that have been in stock. With brands launching new watch models, it means we must sell previous models to make space for the novelties. The watches may have small scuffs on the metal but with certain timepieces offering up to £2,000 off the RRP, it is a great value purchase.

Y for Yellow Gold

Yellow Gold has always been the go-to for adding a touch of luxury. While all our watch brands use 18ct yellow gold, different watchmakers use different techniques to apply the precious metal.

Watch DictionaryThe different methods include PVD coating, caps & jackets and solid gold. PVD coating is where the gold is applied and sinks into the stainless steel. This means that during everyday wear, the gold will not wear off when a few marks and scuffs have been made.

With caps and jackets, this is a piece of gold that wraps around the core metal, acting as a blanket. This is more durable and will take longer for the gold to wear off. Usually, this method will withstand a decades of wear unless over-polishing the watch.

Solid gold means that the case is completely 18ct gold and exuding luxury. The gold in this is the most durable, long-lasting and of course, the most costly.

Z for Zenith El Primero Range Rover Special Edition

A very special timepiece from a special collaboration. The association began in 1969 when Zenith first launched their highly-precise El Primero watch and Ranger Rover created their very first prototype.

Commemorating a crucial year of their journey, Zenith built the Range Rover Special Edition watch using an innovate material, black ceramicised aluminium. The timepiece overall offers modern and timeless aesthetics, while the calibre is a high performance and precise chronograph movement.
