July Birthstone: Ruby

The ruby is a gem that is said to represent love, passion, energy and wisdom and it’s easy to see why. The romantic and powerful red colour of the gem has been said to glow from a fire within the stone and the vibrancy and heat of an enchanting ruby is perfect for the hot summer month of July.

Ruby

A prized possession of Emperors and Kings the ancient Sanskrit for ruby translates as the ‘king of precious stones’ and it has been held in high regard in many cultures. Chinese noblemen adorned their armour with rubies for protection and similarly in Burma warriors believed that the stone would make them invincible. The ancient Chinese also buried rubies beneath their building foundations for good fortune, whilst Ancient Hindus believed they would be reborn as emperors if they offered rubies to the god Krishna.

When set with yellow gold a beautiful ruby has a vintage feel to it, evoking the glamour of a bygone era. The warm tone of the gold cradles the deep red of the ruby, creating a really luxurious feel. The opulence of rubies and yellow gold is undeniable.

Rubies are also a fantastic stone to use in engagement rings. They measure at 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, sitting just below diamond meaning they are a particularly durable stone. As ruby is also the stone of love and romance it's the perfect ft for an engagement ring filled with sentimental meaning. They fit wonderfully with any design, but a halo of diamonds can really help to enhance their mystifying colour.
