Hands-On with Rolex Baselworld 2018

At the most anticipated watch and jewellery exhibition, Baselworld 2018, Rolex didn’t disappoint and delivered some unexpected surprises. Laings were honoured to get close and hands-on with these hot new releases at our exclusive Clydeside Distillery event. Here is what we thought...

Cosmograph Daytona

Baselworld 2018Rolex’s ultimate WOW piece of Baselworld 2018. After being shown images of this glorious 18ct Everose gold, Rainbow Sapphire, Cosmograph Daytona, it was hard to try and Baselworld 2018visualise it on the wrist, but once it was on there is no way you would want to take it off – it will make you as happy as the colours on the rainbow sapphire bezel. We can’t deny that it is quite “extra”, but it is definitely a piece of art! Sapphires naturally come in all different shades and hues, so to ensure the colours flow seamlessly on the bezel is no easy task! The Cosmograph Daytona has always been a firm favourite and it is no surprise that we loved handling this beauty. Crafted in solid 18ct gold, this masterpiece is full of substance and joy.

Deepsea

While the other professional models looked at home on my wrist, this 44mm magnificent beast totally

defeated my little lady’s wrist. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the Deepsea but it is definitely picky when choosing its companion. It is definitely a strikingly handsome and masculine watch. As a classic diver’s watch, it is finished with the usual characteristics, however its additional functions ensure safety and the ability to dive 3900m into the sea. It is potentially the most robust looking timepiece I have come across – equipped with a sturdy steel case and oyster bracelet, the sapphire crystal glass is a whopping 5.5mm thick! The exceptional D-Blue dial cannot go unmentioned – the deep blue to black gradient dial pays tribute to the Deepsea Challenge expedition in 1960, but it also acts as a safety measure since blue is the last colour to be toned out in water. Handsome, robust and clever – this timepiece is certainly a good catch!

GMT-Master II Oystersteel

Baselworld 2018Possibly one of the most craved watches of this year’s Baselworld 2018 collection, we have the Pepsi GMT-Master II on a steel jubilee bracelet. Combining an icon with another icon, Rolex answered all GMT lover’s prayers. Previously the Pepsi GMT was crafted in solid 18ct white gold and as popular as it was it also came with quite a hefty price tag. Rolex have now fitted the iconic Pepsi bezel on a stainless-steel case and bracelet meaning that you can enjoy the benefits of a dual time zone display without the need of a pilot’s salary. Hands on, the 40mm watch feels great and very comfortable to wear, as the lightweight jubilee bracelet gently wraps around the wrist. Opting for the jubilee also adds a touch of glamour with the brushed & polished finishing of the bracelet giving it a dressier look.

Another first in the GMT-Master II family, Rolex has recreated the “Root Beer” - crafting the case and bracelet using 18ct Everose gold. There are two bracelet options – the full 18ct Everose gold oyster bracelet and the steel and Everose gold Rolesor. The solid Everose gold of course has a much warmer, elegant look while the Rolesor sports a striking and clean aesthetic. Overall, visually they look refreshing with a lovely understated neutral tone which gives it so much grace.

Oyster Perpetual

As Rolex’s entry level watch, the Oyster Perpetual is a simple watch made well. With no unnecessary extras, this timepiece is the definition of a timeless classic. Whilst we are no stranger to the Oyster Perpetual, the introduction of the white and black dial is a game changer for this model. The Oyster Perpetual have always provided many dial options, but it is nice to see some fresh new looks with this model. The beauty of the white dial derives from just how basic it is – modest and straightforward. But it never is as straightforward, is it? The white dial is almost an off-white colour due to its warmer undertones giving it an aged look, which we love! It also has a glossy finish which instantly brightens up the watch for a sharp look. On the other hand, we have the black dial. Again, no major fuss. Just a simple, semi-matte sunburst dial that oozes sophistication and elegance – perfect for everyday wear. Even though the new dial options are simple, the versatility that these offer are greater than before.
