Pearls have always had a timeless appeal and lustrous gemstones have been highly-sought after for centuries. South Asian mythology believed they were dewdrops from heaven that fell into the sea, whilst in Ancient India warriors added them to their swords to symbolize tears and sorrow. They also have a royal history with pearl jewellery dating all the way back to 420BC when a piece was worn by a Persian princess. In 2300BC they were often presented to Chinese royalty and in the Roman times Julius Caesar passed a law limiting the wearing of pearls to the ruling class.

The beauty of pearls has been a favourite of style icons through the years with Audrey Hepburn becoming synonymous with beautiful gems and Coco Chanel proclaiming that a woman should “wear ropes and ropes of pearls”.
