Engagement Rings: Does size really matter?

“Will you marry me?” – Four simple words, which make up one of the most important, life-changing questions you may ever ask.

A proposal, and resulting engagement, is a major turning point in the life of any couple, so you will of course want every aspect to be absolutely perfect. For those doing the proposing, choosing the right ring for your significant other is not a decision to be taken lightly.

So when you are looking to purchase an engagement ring, does size matter?

If you search for answers online, or ask friends, family, or co-workers for their opinion on this, you are likely to get a wide range of different, sometimes conflicting, answers. Some people will refer to “unwritten rules”, such as an engagement ring should cost one month’s salary. Even this supposed rule comes under scrutiny, however, with some people saying six or eight weeks’ salary, with others saying only three weeks’ salary should be spent.

You can do as much research and ask as many different people you want for advice, and this is not a bad thing. Getting advice and tips from people who have gone through the experience themselves can only help expand your knowledge. It is important to not let yourself get carried away with what other people say though.

The truth is, when it comes to picking an engagement ring, there is no right or wrong decision. You need to do what is right for your particular relationship.

Don’t bankrupt yourself by choosing a ring that you can’t afford; you don’t want to start your marriage with unnecessary debt – you need to work within your budget.

With regards to size, many people will choose quality over quantity. When looking at diamond rings, it is useful to keep the “four C’s” in mind - carat weight, cut, colour and clarity. You can mix and match these, to make sure you get the best possible ring for your budget. While some people would always want a ring with the largest possible stone on it, others may prefer a smaller stone of higher quality.

If you are at the stage of your relationship where you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner, and are planning to propose, you will already have a good knowledge of their tastes, likes, and dislikes. The best thing you can do is to speak to an expert. Visit a jeweller and ask for their advice – tell them about your partner, your proposal plans, your budget, your partner’s tastes, and anything else you think may be useful. By giving an expert this information, they can explain your options, giving you more information on what is available to you.

So does size matter when it comes to engagement rings?

The honest answer is “it depends.” Your ring is a symbol of your love and devotion to your partner, so if you believe it represents this, you should have nothing to worry about.
