The Bridesmaid Checklist

We all know looking after a bride requires commitment, however, for many bridesmaids-to-be the thought of a pretty dress is priority number one. Fortunately these bridesmaids often fall at the first wedding hurdle, allowing more organised members of the bridal party to take charge. If you’re getting married choose your best girls carefully and ladies, make sure the brides’ happiness is your entire focus. Follow these tips to avoid bridal breakdowns on the big day and she’ll be eternally grateful:

Remember it’s not your day – Your job is to support the bride, even if you think her decisions are insane! Feel free to share your opinions tactfully but her say is final so set aside your own tastes and help her make the necessary arrangements.

  1. Manage your time – We all have a life outside the wedding bubble so make sure you make time to attend important appointments from helping her pick out her dress to writing and posting invitations. Similarly if your diary is hectic, give her notice in advance that you’re unavailable to avoid disappointment. There’s nothing worse than a last minute panic if you’ve forgotten something important.
  2. Consider costs – Weddings are expensive so make sure you set aside some savings for the hen do, wedding present and travel costs, particularly if you live some distance away from the venue. Speak to the bride-to-be about her expectations and if you don’t live nearby make sure you keep in regular contact by phone or email to keep abreast of the plans. Weddings can cost the earth and require a serious financial commitment on your part so be honest with the bride if you feel it’s unmanageable.
  3. Be patient – Let’s face it brides can be a tad emotional before the big day so take a deep breath and take her changeable attitude with a pinch of salt. During the wedding planning process she’ll need your support both emotionally and logistically so put on your most patient hat and offer a listening ear or a shoulder whenever she needs it. Having said that don’t be frightened to have a quiet word if her behaviour becomes offensive or rude.

On the day itself be attentive and remember to calm the brides’ nerves as much as possible, offer her food and water and ensure she has a few moments entirely to herself before walking down the aisle. We think the best bridesmaids are those that anticipate malfunctions before they happen so keep a bridal emergency kit handy in case of spillages and make-up mishaps.
