How to choose the perfect engagement ring

By Ann Russell

Shopping for an engagement ring shouldn’t be scary. With a little research and some expert advice from Laings you’ll find the confidence you need to make this very important purchase. As the proud owner of a beautiful Laings diamond I spoke to my new fiancé about how he chose my ring. From researching shapes and styles to preparing for a purchase here’s our guide to a worry-free engagement.

When considering engagement rings it’s really important to think about the type of jewellery your partner normally wears. Does she wear silver or gold? Does she prefer fine or chunky jewellery? If she likes delicate jewellery then she’s unlikely to want a very thick ring. Similarly if she wears large necklaces and long earrings then something bolder will suit her. Consider her tastes and whether she would prefer 18ct Yellow Gold, 18ct White Gold, 18ct Rose Gold or Platinum.

Diamond Rings

Amidst the distractions of everyday life I was completely unaware that my other half was subtly researching engagement rings. As we wandered down the high street together at weekends and occasionally stopped to look in jeweller’s windows he was quietly gathering ideas about the type of rings I liked. If you’re able to do some research without giving the game away you’ll have a much better picture of her perfect ring.

After establishing some thoughts around the type of rings your partner likes you’ll be better placed to work out a budget. Tradition states a man should spend approximately two months of his salary on the ring but don’t feel obliged to conform to tradition. Carefully consider what is affordable for you and make sure you have a rough idea of your finances before going shopping so you don’t overspend. Laings offer a comprehensive range of payment options which makes life easier if you’re concerned about the affordability of a ring.

If you’re still unclear about your partner’s tastes the experts at Laings can help you make an informed decision. Alternatively feel free to bring along one of her trustworthy friends or a family member who will feel comfortable keeping the secret of your imminent engagement until after you propose. If she has other rings in her jewellery box borrow them without her noticing to give the jeweller an idea of her style and finger size. It’s not ideal but remember the ring can be exchanged for another if it isn’t quite right.

Now that you’re ready to buy the ring Laings’ diamond experts will discuss the characteristics of each diamond with you. These are commonly known as the Four C’s - cut, colour, clarity and carat. The cut of the diamond is the most important factor to consider and is the only characteristic that is man made. Round cut diamonds are very popular but Laings also stock emerald, pear, princess, square and oval shaped diamonds.

Whilst in store take as much time as you need to make your decision. My fiancé gave himself a few hours to look at ring options and the assistant carefully

discussed the cut, colour, clarity and carat of each diamond with him whilst weighing up the pros and cons of each meaning he could establish which ring was the best within his budget. This gave him the confidence to make an informed decision and complete faith in the quality and standard of the ring. It’s likely to be the most expensive piece of jewellery you’ve ever bought so you'll want to do things properly.

Now that you’ve navigated the diamond minefield and have a beautiful engagement ring for your soulmate all that’s left is the proposal. Don’t forget to pop back into Laings with your bride-to-be for a celebratory glass of bubbly!
