Behind the Scenes with Laings in Spain

By Ann Russell, Stylist

Last week, on a cloudy Glasgow afternoon, a creative team from Laings flew to sunny Marbella in Spain to shoot the new advertising campaign for 2013/2014. As the stylist on location I had the pleasure of working with Photographers Roddy Hand and Andy Rae, Make-up Artist Ana Cruzalegui, Model Kristina Antanaityte from Colours Agency, CEO Stuart Laing and Senior Sales Executive Linda Robertson.

With our luggage allowances checked and toiletries scanned we boarded our flight to Malaga and Linda and I got straight to business. We discussed the clothes I’d brought and matched each piece of jewellery to the most relevant of our four themes – evening wear, casual wear, tailoring and bridal.  I’d specifically chosen elegant and timeless clothing to compliment Laings selection of luxury jewellery and watches. Meanwhile our photographers were making plans for our first location, the sleek Trocadero Beach Club pictured below.

Safely on Spanish soil we were welcomed by 25C heat and our Scottish skin shone at the prospect of some Vitamin D. A quick journey to our apartments in Marbella meant we were able to get unpacked and prepared for the following day before bed. With a plan to shoot our tailoring theme in the morning I steamed an Armani linen jacket (courtesy of Epitome) with the window open to catch the last of the balmy evening heat.

In the morning we woke early, had breakfast on our apartment’s balcony and Ana began work on Kristina’s hair and make-up. For our first tailored look we paired a Fope 18ct yellow gold and diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet set with a Julien MacDonald boat neck top that highlighted Kristina’s neckline beautifully. My favourite set from our morning shoot was an Aminoff triple row south sea baroque pearl necklace and bracelet that completely transformed a simple monochrome dress.

After a late lunch break we moved to the boardwalk along the beach to catch the soft afternoon light. In the photo below Kristina is wearing a Jonathan Saunders safari dress with 18ct fancy three row diamond ring and a Rolex 18ct rose gold Daytona watch on a black strap.  As the sun set behind the mountains we finished for the day and enjoyed some tapas and sangria on our balcony before bed.

Thursday was another scorcher and we set up for the morning in the perfectly manicured gardens surrounding our apartments. Kristina was transformed into a bride in Rowan Joy, Ben De Lisi and Julien Macdonald gowns and Bella Brilla tiaras. Mikimoto and Aminoff Pearls were featured in this theme and worked well with the bridal dresses but  diamonds were a bride’s best friend with ‘something blue’ in an 18ct white gold sapphire and diamond cluster pendant, earrings and ring and some pretty Gregg Ruth white and pink diamonds.

Our week ended at sunset on Thursday with evening wear which we teamed with some stunning showpiece jewellery including the Al Coro 18ct rose gold diamond pendant, bangle, earrings and ring. Here’s a sneak peek of the evening jewellery we used, (pictured to the right).

On Thursday night it was a wrap and with shooting complete there was just time for some celebratory drinks before heading home the following day. We all can’t wait to share the campaign images with you in the coming months.
